Living Streets is the national charity that stands up for pedestrians. It campaigns to create safe, attractive and enjoyable streets where people live. It has always done so since coming into being in 1929 as the Pedestrians Association. You owe them the Highway Code, driver training, pedestrian crossings and laws against drunk driving, to name but a few achievements.
Today, Living Streets is still campaigning but it also provides consultancy support to local councils. Through its growing network of local groups Living Streets is achieving significant improvements in residential streets right across the UK. Local groups everywhere campaign for living streets locally but many also offer information and support to residents who want to achieve improvements in the streets where they live.
Living Streets works with many different partners, communities and professionals as part of their work. An open, professional, friendly, enabling and collaborative approach characterises the work and people of the national group, and all local groups across the country.
The vision aims at safe, attractive and enjoyable streets across the UK, working for people-friendly public spaces. This means campaigning to ensure ...
- the needs of pedestrians are prioritized over traffic in the streets where we live
- people who like walking or cycling are involved in decision-making about local public spaces
- walking is appreciated as a natural choice for short journeys
